A native of Glasgow, David was educated at the High School of Glasgow and Glasgow University (MB 62, MD 73), and became Consultant Physician and Clinical Pharmacologist in Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1973. His main interests are in methods of surveillance of Adverse Reactions to Medicines and in Medicine Regulation. He was a Visiting Professor in the School of Pharmacy in Strathclyde University from 1976-2004 (Hon DSc 2001) and an Honorary Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics in Glasgow University from 1993 until his retirement in 2004.An early member of the Committee on Review of Medicines (Dept of Health London), he was its final Chairman (1987-1991) before becoming the Chairman of the Medicines Commission (1993 – 2001). He was instrumental in founding the Scottish Medicines Consortium in 2000 which he chaired for its initial four years. He is now Chairman of Trustees at the Drug Safety Research Unit in Southampton. He now enjoys his lifelong hobbies of bird watching and photography.
